27 Apr Virtual library services can take you anywhere
“Reading can take you places you have never been before.” – Dr. Seuss
We’ve always loved this Dr. Seuss quote, but it seems especially applicable now. We’re all dying to go somewhere, and many of us are realizing the power reading has to transport us to any locale anywhere.
Sharing resources online has long been a benefit for our patrons. In fact, utilizing online content has been one of our most popular services for years.
But suddenly, connecting virtually is the only way we can reach you. Now that we’re living in this socially distant world, it has been wonderful to see how our virtual library still allows our patrons to travel and escape to all kinds of far off places — since none of us can actually leave the house.
If you aren’t utilizing our virtual library, the Eastern Oklahoma Library System has so many downloadable resources to help you explore this world from the safety of your home. Check out all of our online resources: We have thousands of eBooks ready to download for every age group. Read at your own pace or listen to them as an audiobook. Download movies to stream at home. Read books that inspire math comprehension. Flip though digital magazines. All these resources are available with a simple download to a smart device through a free app, streamed through an MP3 player or played right through your internet browser.
You can’t leave your house right now, but that doesn’t mean the world isn’t there for you to explore.
We’ve also been inspired and impressed with the virtual efforts of our library friends all across the country. Because distance is meaningless in this digital space, we can virtually attend any of these great online offerings. Here are a few of our favorites right now:
Nightly bedtime stories
The McArthur Public Library in Biddeford, Maine hosts daily online story times and bedtime stories every night a 7 p.m. Isn’t this a great way to help kiddos wind down each day? And, for big kids, the library is hosting an online knitting group each Friday.
See the world’s most beautiful libraries
Did you know some of the most beautiful architecture anywhere is found in the world’s libraries? Sigh, we love this: You can take virtual tours of some of the most iconic, most architecturally beautiful libraries in the world. From your couch.
We ‘heart’ children’s art
The Wichita Public Library didn’t cancel its annual art exhibit, Young Artists Exhibit at the Library, but took it online instead. Typically, the artwork from early childhood centers across Wichita hang in Wichita Public Libraries’ branches, but this year, it’s online for all to enjoy. Enjoy this fun work from East Heights United Methodist Preschool.
Tell us what you are loving!
Are you seeing people connect with books and the love of discover? Share with us your favorite ways you are seeing people interact. Who knows? Maybe we can do something similar through the EOLS system. After all, the favorite part of what we get to do is connect with each of you. Let’s keep connected while we are apart.
