All it takes is to read one book a day with your child to build a foundation for lifelong success.

How It Works

Children who have not yet started Kindergarten are eligible to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

1. Sign up online today at or at your local library.

2. Enter the books you read to your child online or use the paper logs to track your progress.

3. After each 100-book milestone, visit your library to receive a milestone marker and pick up a new tracking sheet. (Branch milestone markers may vary.)

4. When your child reaches 1,000 books read, go to the library to get a diploma!

Track your child’s progress online or download and print the count sheet!

How do we read 1,000 books before Kindergarten?

It’s easy!
1 book per day for 3 years=1,095 books
10 books per week for 2 years=1,040
3 books a day for 1 year=1,095

Do we have to read only books from the library?

Nope, any age appropriate books count! No matter where you get them, how many times you read them, they all count. But, remember that your library card gives you free access to our full catalog of books and ebooks, including special collections in hoopla, Overdrive, and more.
