Muskogee Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program Invites Students, Volunteer Tutors, and Council Members to Share Their Stories

For over four decades, the Muskogee Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program has been committed to supporting adults, 18 and over, on their journey of lifelong learning.

The program, established in 1979, offers adults the opportunity to enhance their literacy skills, prepare for GED and U.S. Citizenship tests, and improve their English proficiency.

In recent years, we began computer literacy classes specifically for ages 60 and over, meeting the need for important digital skills for today’s world.  Our most recent addition is the introduction of hybrid GED classes giving the opportunity for students to attend the class together whether they are attending online or in person.

Our program continues to expand in what we offer. We have plans for more classes and additions to our program to meet the needs of present and future adult learners and our community.

The success of our program is seen in the many stories of achievement over the decades. An essential part of these successes has been the dedication and support of our volunteer tutors. Their commitment to both the program and the adult learners has been significant in helping adults reach the goals they have set for themselves when beginning the program.

Over the next few months, we will share some of the history of the program, along with present activities and successes. We will also share about the organization of Muskogee Area Literacy Council (MALC), and their support of the adult literacy program.

If you have been part of the Muskogee Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program, or Muskogee Area Literacy Council, whether as a student, volunteer tutor, or council member, we invite you to share your experience with us. Your story is an important part of showing the impact of the adult literacy program.

This is a wonderful opportunity to inspire others to begin their own educational journey with our program.

To share your story or learn more about our program, please contact Penny Chastain at 918-682-6657 ext. 112 or email pchastain@eols.org. We look forward to hearing from you.
