VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TUTORING IN ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM

The adult literacy program at the Muskogee Public Library is a terrific place to volunteer
if you want to assist adults in improving skills that will benefit not just them but also their
families and the community.

Our program offers Adult Basic Education, GED test preparation, English as a Second
Language, and U.S. Citizenship test preparation for persons ages 18 and older who live in any of the Eastern Oklahoma Library System’s six counties: Adair, Cherokee, Delaware, McIntosh, Muskogee, and Sequoyah.

You will work with the students as a volunteer tutor to help them improve their skills in
one or more of the aforementioned areas.

A teaching degree, certification, or prior teaching experience is not required. You can tutor in person at Muskogee Public Library, or virtually via Zoom, Google Meet, WhatsApp, FaceTime, or other platforms as needed.

The following are the basic requirements for tutors working in our program:
You must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, be able to speak, read, and write English proficiently, have a basic understanding of
computers, or be ready to learn them.

You must live in the Northeastern region of Oklahoma to volunteer for our literacy
program.

Getting started is easy.

You must complete an application, which is available online or in the Adult Literacy
Department of Muskogee Public Library, along with a background check.

Once the background check and application are approved you will be required to complete a 10-hour tutor training certification class. A few things we talk about during the training are adult literacy in our area and what the needs are, tutoring techniques, learning styles, the expectations we have of tutors and students participating in our program, and much more.

You’ll be ready to begin tutoring once you’ve finished the training.

The adult literacy coordinator will be available, to you both during the training and throughout the time you are a tutor for our program.
